New Delhi, 22 September. A total of 79 applications have been made by 35 companies under the PLI scheme for special steel. Union Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia gave this information at the ‘National Management Conference’ organized by All India Management Association (AIMA) here on Tuesday. “The last date to apply ended two days ago. We have received around 79 applications from 35 companies. We expect to add 28 million tonnes per annum of special steel capacity. This will create 70,000 employment opportunities.
A senior steel ministry official told PTI that the applicants include all major steel companies like Tata Steel, JSW Steel, JSPL, AMNS India and SAIL. According to the official, however, no proposal has been received from any foreign body. Officials said after scrutinizing the proposals, the government will release a final list, which will take around 35-40 days.

The government had set September 15 as the deadline for applying for special steel under the PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme. The Union Cabinet in July last year had approved the Rs 6,322 crore PLI scheme to boost the production of special steel in India.
