Maharashtra in India is particularly grappling with an outbreak of measles at this time. It is being claimed in media reports that 13 children have died of measles in the last one month in Mumbai and its surrounding areas.

Apart from Maharashtra, there have also been reports of increase in the number of cases in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand and Kerala. The State Governments and the Central Government are worried and preparations are being made to start preventive measures immediately.

But now it has come to the fore that this is not only the problem of India, but the problem of increase in measles cases is standing face to face in the whole world. A new report has claimed that in 2021, about four crore children in the whole world did not get the dose of vaccine given against measles.

This report, released jointly by the World Health Organization and the CDC of America, states that about 2.5 crore children did not receive the first dose and about 1.47 crore children did not receive the second dose.

effect of covid

The report is showing that the level of vaccination is still not the same as before, as an effect of the upheaval in the health system caused by the Kovid-19 pandemic.

According to the report, this decline is a major push for efforts to eradicate measles from the world. World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said how ironic it is that while vaccines against Kovid have been made and given in record time, the general vaccination programs have been badly affected and millions of people are at risk. Gone.

Measles has killed nearly 700 people in Zimbabwe this year

This problem has had a wide impact in India. According to media reports, more than 200 cases have been reported in Mumbai alone in the last two months. This is a big jump as compared to the cases coming up in the last few years.

According to a report, there were 10 cases in Mumbai in 2021 and one victim died, in 2020 there were 29 cases but not a single death and in 2019, 37 cases and three victims died.

Under the National Immunization Program in India, measles vaccine has to be given in two doses to every child. The first dose should be given at the age of nine months and the second at the age of 15 months. Officials have admitted that vaccination has been affected due to Covid. In Mumbai alone, about 20,000 children could not be given the measles vaccine.

risk of major crisis

Measles can be almost completely prevented if the vaccine is given at the right time. But since it is so contagious, herd immunity is necessary to destroy it completely and stay destroyed. Herd immunity can be achieved only if an estimated 95 percent of the population is given two or more doses of the vaccine.

In 2021, only 81 percent of children worldwide had received the first dose and 71 percent of children had received the second dose. This was the lowest global average of the first dose since 2008. India was among the five countries where most children did not receive the first dose. Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Indonesia are also included in this list.

This situation can become a matter of concern for governments around the world because no region of the world has ever been able to completely eradicate and eradicate measles and its virus can spread across borders very quickly.

Fresh outbreaks and reintroduced spread have been observed in 10 countries that have eliminated measles since 2016. In view of the current situation in India, the Union Health Ministry has formed teams of experts and sent them to investigate the latest outbreak and suggest preventive measures.
