By March 2023, more than 500 government schools in Telangana will have access to solar power. Last year, the state government had announced that it would install rooftop solar systems in 1,521 government schools in 12 districts at a cost of Rs 32 crore. According to Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) officials, solar panels have so far been installed in over 100 government schools and work orders have been issued for another 453 schools.

A senior official said, “In the first phase of the project, we will install solar panels in around 500 government schools. We are expecting that the work of all 1,521 schools will be completed in the next few months.

Last September, TSREDCO had invited tenders for installation of solar panels and finalized 11 vendors. Selected vendors are installing rooftop solar systems ranging from 2 KW to 5 KW in the schools. Schools with enrollment of more than 200 have been selected for installation of solar panels. Of the selected 1,521 government schools, 916 come under the Southern Power Distribution Company Limited and 605 under the Northern Power Distribution Company Limited.
