At least 55.5 per cent of the 14,89,115 schools in the country did not have computer facilities, according to the 2021-22 report of the Integrated District Education Information System Plus (UDISE-Plus) for school education in India. In the academic year 2021-22, 66 per cent schools were without internet. During that time the education system was online due to the Kovid-19 pandemic.

The UDISE-Plus report released on Thursday is based on voluntary data from government and private schools. The report said that in the academic year 2021-22, only 6,82,566 schools had computers, while 5,04,989 of them had internet access.

The report has shed light on the digital rift between schools. According to the report, only 2.2 per cent of schools had digital libraries and only 14.9 per cent of them had “smart classrooms”, which are used for teaching with digital boards, smart boards and smart TVs.

Not only this, the report said that 10.6 percent of the schools did not have electricity and 23.04 percent of the schools did not have playgrounds. While 12.7 percent did not have a library and reading rooms.

At the same time, more than 20 thousand schools were closed during 2020-21 across the country. While the number of teachers also registered a decline of 1.95 percent compared to last year. According to the report, the total number of schools in 2021-22 is 14.89 lakh while in 2020-21 their number was 15.09 lakh. According to the report, “The decline in the number of schools is mainly due to the closure of schools under private and other management.”

Scrutiny of the data revealed that of the 20,021 schools that were closed, 9,663 were government, 1,815 government aided, 4,909 private and 3,634 under “other management” categories.
