An iceberg the size of London has broken away from an ice shelf in Antarctica. The incident took place near the Heli Research Station on Sunday. According to the report of National Geographic, this process of breaking of iceberg is called caving. The giant iceberg is about 600 square miles (1550 square km) in size. A 492-feet-thick (150 m) chunk of ice broke off on Sunday.

150 m Iceberg separated from thick ice

However, this phenomenon is not linked to climate change. According to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), scientists had already expected this incident. Actually, the process of caving is very natural. This happens when the ice sheets become very thick. BAS monitors the condition of the ice shelves in Antarctica. The BAS research station monitors the condition of the giant ice shelf daily.

Glacier will soon be named

BAS glaciologist Dominic Hodgson said that the caving incident in this part of Antarctica has happened for the second time in the last two years. Earlier in February 2021, the 1,270 sq km iceberg broke away from a 150 meter thick ice rock. It was named A74. BAS said the new iceberg is slightly larger than A74. BAS has said that the new iceberg may be much larger but it will also flow in the same direction in which the A74 was flowing. It hasn’t been named yet. It would later be named by the US National Ice Center.

Antarctica’s ice has been breaking for decades

Scientists have been noticing cracks in the frozen ice in Antarctica for decades. Before 2021, the incident of separation of the huge iceberg happened in 1971. BAS has told in a press release that all the changes taking place in the atmosphere of Antarctica are being monitored. Many satellites around the world, including the American space agency NASA, are analyzing them. BAS said on its website that between 2015 and 2022, the gap is set to widen.
