Amaravati, November 22 – The state government on Monday signed a tripartite agreement with Andhra Pradesh Women’s Development Society and Lawrencedale Agro Processing Pvt Ltd for integrated tomato value chain development. The integrated value chain will involve 20 farmer-producer organizations, benefitting 20,000 tomato farmers. The Andhra Pradesh Food Processing Society entered into the MoU with the other two organizations in the presence of Agriculture Minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy at the Secretariat. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is implementing unique schemes to benefit all sections and one such scheme is for the welfare of tomato growers.

“The Integrated Tomato Value Chain Development Program was launched in public-private partnership mode to ensure that there is no role of middlemen in the sale of tomatoes and that farmers are benefited at large,” the minister said. Tomato is in the list of Central government’s Operation Green under which food processing units are being set up for tomato, onion and potato. The Food Processing Society (FPS), set up as an extension of the agriculture department, will help ensure that tomato farmers get benefits. “Generally due to fluctuations in demand and supply, tomato prices either increase or decrease causing losses to consumers or farmers. Whenever there is high demand and low supply, the government intervenes in the market. and making tomatoes available at reasonable prices through Rythu Bazars,” the minister said. “Now, with integrated tomato value chain development, farmers who are suffering due to erratic weather conditions and excessive supply will be able to stabilize their income from tomato crop,” Kakani elaborated.

According to the minister, the Andhra Pradesh Food Processing Society has taken up 20 primary processing units in the state at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore and work on four of them has been completed. Steps are being taken to inaugurate them next month. The operation and maintenance of food processing units will be entrusted to the food processing committees. Andhra Pradesh Women’s Development Society will be entrusted with the work of cleaning, washing, grading and other food processing processes, while marketing chain development will be done by Lawrencedale Agro Processing Pvt Ltd. Kakani congratulated Principal Secretary (Marketing and Cooperative Society) Chiranjeevi Chowdhury, CEO of Andhra Pradesh Food Processing Society L Sreedhan Reddy. CS Reddy, CEO, AP Women’s Development Society, P Vijayaraghavan, CEO, Lawrencedale Agro Processing Pvt Ltd and others were present.
