Chelimi Alivelamma, a member of the women’s group, said the initial support came from the Rural and Environmental Development Society (REDS). We have named this group ‘Man Bhoomi Mahila Collective Farming’. We are doing farming in Anantapur Rural Mandal, which is rain deficient for the last three years. Now the group is self-sufficient and grows guava, custard apple, bajra, vegetables and fruits. It has adopted the ‘Navdhanya concept’, where all kinds of cereals and pulses are grown to support a family and make agriculture a profitable venture.

Director C. Bhanuja, who actively advises the group, says the land owner has leased the land and the group earns Rs 40,000 a month after all expenses. It has tied up with a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) in Kadiri for the sale of its produce. Alivelamma said that inspired by the health concepts promoted by independent nutritionist Khadar Vali, the group cooks three meals a day for diabetics. These people do not eat anything from outside and have been on the diet of millet as prescribed by nutritionists. They are part of a month-long experiment to see if this food can lower their blood sugar levels.
