The European Union has decided that mobile phones, laptops, tablet cameras, e-readers, earbuds, portable speakers and some other devices have a common charging port – USB-C. This will prevent huge amount of e-waste and will also provide convenience to the user. However, this new decision will be applicable only in Europe for the time being. This new decision is being considered as a big setback for the Apple company.
Berlin, 08 June:
The European Union has decided that from 2024, all electronic devices will use the same charger. That is, in the coming times, mobile phones, laptops, tablet cameras, e-readers, ear buds, portable speakers and other devices will also have the same type of charger. This will be a USB-C charger, which is currently only available for some new models including Apple and Google.

C-type charger preferred
At present, many types of chargers are being used in the market. In this, Apple’s Lightning, Micro USB and USB C-type charger are prominent. But USB C-Type has been adopted for its accessibility and considering it to be relatively fast. However, in the EU, this agreement is currently provisional and is yet to be formally approved.

blow for apple company
This is being considered a big setback for the Apple company. Because not only does he keep the charger of his device apart from the rest, but the price is also high. Apple has long been opposing the idea. Apple argues that improper use of a dated international standard stifles innovation and could create a mountain of electronic waste by forcing users to switch to new chargers.

Decision not applicable on existing equipment
The European Union, disagreeing with Apple’s idea, has decided to have the same charger all over the world. After this decision, now Apple will have to change its charging port for its products like iPhone, iPad etc. However, this decision of the European Union will not apply to existing equipment. That is, such devices which are available in the market before 2024, they will be able to be sold with the old charger.

E-waste will come down
The European Union says that with these new rules people will not have to spend unnecessarily on new chargers. This will save its 450 million consumers about 250 million euros or about two billion rupees annually. Along with this, electronic waste will also reduce by 11,000 tonnes annually. According to a report, about 86 kg of invisible waste is generated to make a smartphone and about 1,200 kg to make a laptop.
