Recently some of the most developed countries in the world have banned the downloading and keeping of China’s TikTok app on government equipment keeping in mind the security threats. These countries have also said that if any government official has Tiktok in his device, he should delete it immediately.

TikTok is a social media app that allows users to create and share short-form videos. It was created by Chinese tech company ByteDance and launched in September 2016 under the name Douyin.

TikTok quickly gained popularity in China and was later launched internationally in September 2017. Tiktok has since become one of the most popular social media apps worldwide. It had over one billion monthly active users by 2021. According to estimates by the Omnicore agency, TikTok will have 1.8 billion monthly users worldwide in 2023.

India and Tiktok
India was one of the biggest markets for TikTok. In June 2020, the Indian government banned TikTok and several other Chinese apps due to concerns about national security and data privacy. On 15 June 2020, when Indian and Chinese forces clashed in Galvan, the tension between India and China escalated and on 29 June 2020 i.e. exactly 14 days later, India banned 58 Chinese apps including Tiktok. The Indian government claimed that the banned apps were a threat to India’s sovereignty and integrity.

Tiktok ban in which countries
In December 2022, Taiwan banned Tiktok from all government equipment. At the same time, investigation was also started on suspicion of illegal operation of Tiktok.

China’s special friend Pakistan has also banned Tiktok at least four times since October 2020. Sometimes said that there is ‘inappropriate content’, sometimes said it is ‘immorality, obscene’.

The Taliban government of Afghanistan banned Tiktok saying that apps like Tiktok have a bad influence on the youth and according to the Taliban government their aim is to prevent this bad influence from falling on the younger generation.

The White House has ordered federal agencies to remove TikTok from all US government equipment and has given the agency 30 days to do so. America has even talked about introducing a bipartisan law against Tiktok.

The Canadian government has also banned the use of TikTok on all government devices in the country. The Canadian government has also banned TikTok citing privacy and security.

The New Zealand government has banned TikTok from being on the phones of New Zealand MPs amid security concerns.

The British Parliament has closed its Tiktok account. The British Parliament said that the Tiktok app is sharing users’ data to the Chinese government. According to reports, some British MPs had raised concerns about data security.

The three top EU bodies, namely the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, have banned TikTok on employees’ devices. The European Union has recommended its MPs and staff to remove TikTok from their personal devices.

How much loss is being caused to Tiktok due to being banned in countries
Due to Tiktok being banned in India, it suffered a huge loss and due to its ban in India, its global market has also been affected. According to reports, Tiktok has lost around $6 billion due to its ban in India. After India, Tiktok is now being banned in different countries as well. According to a 2022 Wall Street Journal report, the losses of ByteDance Ltd., the owner of TikTok, were to more than triple in 2021 in the wake of continuing sanctions by several countries.
