Bhubaneswar, June 10: A day after the Center hiked the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy by Rs 100 per quintal, Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Thursday reiterated its demand to increase it to Rs 2,930 per quintal. The Center has increased the MSP of normal variety paddy from Rs 1,940 in 2021-22 to Rs 2,040 per quintal for normal variety for the 2022-23 crop year.

Addressing a press conference here, BJD’s national spokesperson Sasmit Patra said that this increase of only Rs 100 per quintal is not enough and BJD is demanding to increase the MSP of paddy by 1.5 times the cost of production as per the Swaminathan Commission. recommendations.

Patra said that on March 25, 2017, the Odisha Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution recommending raising the MSP of mango paddy to Rs 2,930 per quintal.

He said that all the MLAs including BJP, Congress and BJD had unanimously supported it. But even after five years of the passage of this resolution and several demands in this regard by BJD MPs in Parliament and the Assembly, the Center has not implemented it.
