Amritsar, Senior BJP leader Jagmohan Singh Raju has announced a two-day fast in Amritsar against the liquor policy of the Punjab government. Along with this, he has written a letter to the President of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Harjinder Singh Dhami, drawing attention to the social and economic loss due to the increasing use of liquor in Punjab and has demanded to open a front against the policy. Raju has written in his letter that most of the people of the Sikh community in Punjab are addicted to alcohol. In Punjab, 30.5 per cent of Sikhs drink alcohol, while the number of Hindus who drink alcohol is 25 per cent and the number of Muslims is 6 per cent. Raju has written in his letter that our gurus have given us the message to stay away from drugs, but in spite of this, every person in Punjab drinks 7.9 liters of alcohol in a year and we are second in terms of drinking alcohol in the country.

Raju has written in his letter that this situation is very serious because even among the youth of 10 to 17 years, the addiction of alcohol is increasing continuously and this addiction which starts with alcohol will later become tobacco, opium and many others. Leads to other types of drugs. Due to this the social and economic fabric of Punjab is deteriorating.

To know the ground reality of drugs in Punjab and to make people aware against it, Jagmohan Singh Raju organized a campaign from July 31 to August 11, in which this campaign was run in more than 45 towns of Punjab. During this, he met thousands of people and through social media, about two million people were reached. During this campaign, he has come to know that after the use of alcohol by the male members of the family, their behavior towards women and children becomes violent, due to which cases of unrest in the families are also increasing.

Raju has written in his letter that the liquor policy of the present government of Punjab is against the Sikh principles and through this liquor policy work is being done to push the youth of Punjab towards alcohol. To stop this SGPC. needs to be actively pursued.

To stop the sale of liquor in Punjab, there should be a ban on the sale of liquor and tobacco within one kilometer radius of the historical gurdwaras. Apart from this, there should also be a ban on the use of alcohol and cigarettes in public places. Like Gandhi Jayanti, dry day should be declared on every Gurpurab and liquor vends should be opened at a day’s interval.
