what is camel festival

Oont Mahotsav (Camel Festival) was first organized in 2000 by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC). It is an annual event held in Bikaner usually in the month of January. Camel Festival is being organized in Bikaner since its inception. Bikaner has a camel research and breeding centre, the only center of its kind in Asia, which provides assistance to camel owners and preserves the endangered species of camels. The festival starts from Junagarh Fort and ends at Dr. Karni Singh Stadium, the main venue of the festival.

The festival showcases the cultural richness of Rajasthan, the beauty of the desert and the importance of camels to the world. Camels have been an integral part of the culture and daily life of the people of Rajasthan for centuries. The Camel Festival also provides an opportunity to promote the traditional art, music and dress of Rajasthan.

Highlights of the Camel Festival over the years

Ever since the Camel Festival started, it has been a major tourist attraction. About 2500 domestic and foreign tourists had reached the 2022 Camel Festival. In the Camel Festival of the year 2022, 14-year-old Asmit Ali Mir tied a 900 meter long safa in 18 minutes, which was made by combining about 95 safas. This year, a video of a Japanese woman doing art work on a camel with her hair went viral on social media. what else remains special

Camels are the center of this festival, so there are many events related to them, such as camel races, where camels of all ages and breeds compete in a race, with prizes given to the winners. Similarly, in camel beauty pageants, camels are judged on their physical characteristics, such as the size of their humps, fur, and overall appearance. Also, different artifacts are also made on the body of camels by cutting their hair.

Camel dance is most liked in this festival. Apart from these dances other competitions are also held like camel polo and camel acrobatics. There is also a camel milk competition in which it is decided which camel’s milk is the most nutritious. In this festival, camels are decorated with designs and patterns, which are called camel tattoos.

Apart from competitions, this festival is also a great platform for camel owners to sell and buy their cattle. Along with this, Rajasthani cultural programs, folk music and folk dance performances and traditional games are also made a part of the festival to woo the tourists.

After independence, the Ganga Jaisalmer Risala, a camel unit of the Indian Army, participated in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.
