Can a great earthquake come to wreak havoc on the earth? This year’s figures are scaring the world

This year the earthquake caused the most devastation in this country
If it is seen in terms of damage, then the most dangerous earthquake of this year has come in Khost of Afghanistan. A 6.0 magnitude earthquake on June 22 killed more than 1,100 people. The second major earthquake of the year occurred in West Java (Indonesia) on 21 November. The intensity of this earthquake was 5.6. In which about 300 people lost their lives.

More than 11 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher occurred this year
In recent days, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Malango in the Solomon Islands, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Turkey’s Deuz province, and a 6.2-magnitude earthquake in Mexico’s Baja California. According to estimates, in the year 2022, more than 11 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or more have been recorded so far. Whereas this year there have been more than 100 such earthquakes whose intensity was between 6.0 and 6.9. In India too, there were tremors of earthquake in the northern as well as in the northeastern region this month.

What does more earthquakes mean?
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) states that a sudden or temporary increase in seismic activity is considered normal. Nor does such an increase or decrease indicate that a major earthquake is likely to occur. One aspect of the increase or decrease in earthquake occurrences is that the world now has more and more advanced seismological instruments that better record such activity.

There are an average of 16 major earthquakes every year
The USGS says that, if we take 1900 as our base year, we can expect about 16 major earthquakes in any given year. In which 15 earthquakes are considered to be of 7.9 magnitude, while one earthquake is considered to be of 8.0 or more magnitude. Our records over the last 40-50 years show that we have exceeded the long-term average number of large earthquakes by about a dozen times.

Can earthquakes be predicted?
Scientists do not have a clear answer to this question. So far no scientist or earthquake monitoring agency has been able to predict any major earthquake. What scientists have predicted so far. It has only managed to state that a significant seismic event may occur within a specified period of time (in years) in a specific geographic location.

What are megaquakes?
Megaquakes are known as earthquakes of magnitude 10 or more. According to the USGS, such earthquakes cannot happen. The magnitude of an earthquake is determined by the length of the fault on which it occurs. There hasn’t been a magnitude 10 earthquake yet. Even if it comes, it will affect the whole earth. The largest earthquake ever recorded on Earth was of magnitude 9.5. Which came to Chile on 22 May 1960.
