Children’s Day 2022: Children’s Day is celebrated every year on 14 November in India. Children’s Day is celebrated every year on the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. Till 1959, Children’s Day was celebrated in India on 20 November. The United Nations celebrates Children’s Day every year on 20 November. But after the death of the country’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, it was decided that Children’s Day in India would now be celebrated every year on 14 November, the day of Nehru’s birth anniversary. Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889.

Nehru, affectionately called ‘Chacha Nehru’, had great affection for children. He founded the Children’s Film Society India in 1955 to make indigenous cinema especially for children. Nehru had said, “Today’s children will make tomorrow’s India. The way we nurture them will decide the future of the country.”

Jawaharlal Nehru not only believed in a modern and scientific approach to nurture the talents of children but also took the initiative to establish some of the most prominent educational institutions in India. He was instrumental in the establishment of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and the IIMs.

How is Children’s Day celebrated?

Cultural programs and competitions are organized in educational institutions across the country on 14 November. Programs are organized for children in schools, they are given gifts and sweets. Although there is no official holiday by the government on Children’s Day. Various events like competitions, music and dance performances are organized on this day in schools and colleges.

When is Children’s Day celebrated around the world

Children’s Day was started in 1857 by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard in Chelsea, USA. Even though Children’s Day is celebrated globally by most of the countries of the world on 1st June. But Children’s Day is celebrated annually on 20 November by the United Nations.
