Chandigarh, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann participated in the Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During this Punjab Bhagwant Mann raised many issues of the state. He said that, at the time when the country was going through the crisis of starvation, at that time the hardworking farmers of Punjab had made the country self-sufficient by producing food grains. Taking up the issues related to agriculture in the state, he stressed on the need to make Minimum Support Price (MSP) a legal guarantee and ensure a sound marketing system for alternative crops.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann said that farming is no longer a profitable business due to which farmers are facing serious trouble. Bhagwant Mann said that every effort should be made to rescue the farmers from such a critical situation for which the central government should take steps. He said that the need of the hour is to do this so that the interests of the farmers can be protected. Similarly, CM Mann said that the minimum support price should also be profitable because the cost of cultivation has increased manifold due to which the farmers are not getting the right price for their crop.

MSP committee dismissed
Denying outright the committee formed by the Government of India on the Minimum Support Price, the Chief Minister demanded that it should be reconstituted by including genuine farmers. He said that the committee is dominated by knowledgeless economists who have no knowledge of agriculture. Bhagwant Mann said that along with all the experts of this committee, agricultural experts should also be made members. Expressing concern over the import of pulses at high prices in the country, the Chief Minister said that there is a need to stop the outflow of the country’s wealth and Punjab can play an important role in this. He said that the farmers of the state are ready to make the country self-sufficient in the production of pulses. Therefore, the central government should announce the minimum support price for pulses and therefore should also assure a proper marketing system.

Concern expressed over falling groundwater
The Chief Minister said that there is an urgent need for agricultural diversification to remove the farmers from the wheat/paddy cropping cycle on the one hand and to save the depleting ground water level on the other. He expressed grief that the water level in 117 blocks out of total 150 blocks has reached the danger level. Bhagwant Mann sought the cooperation of the central government to check the water level by imposing the minimum support price on alternative crops as well. The Chief Minister also informed NITI Aayog that the Punjab Government was making concerted efforts to improve the education infrastructure in the state. He said that at present the education system in the state is in turmoil, for which a lot of work is required.
