Bhubaneswar, November 24- Other employees will be benefited. Public Relations Webdesk. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday announced a special package for kendu leaf pickers and other workers. This package will benefit about eight lakh leaf pluckers, binders and other employees associated with the trade. The Chief Minister announced the package after three rounds of discussion last week on various problems faced by kendu leaf pluckers. Under the package, in the first phase, Rs 1,000 will be given to each collector and Rs 1,500 to each seasonal staff and binder. Stipend will be given to the children of kendu leaf pluckers and other employees.

Meritorious students will also be rewarded at the district level. Gratuity payment for circle and binding checkers will be increased from seven days to 15 days. Identity cards will be issued to all collectors. Stating that the government has always worked for the welfare of kendu leaf pluckers and other employees, the Chief Minister said that Odisha was the first state in the country to give bonus to kendu leaf pluckers. “This policy has become a model for other states,” he added. He said that the GST on kendu leaves is high and this has affected people who depend on the business for their livelihood. “I had earlier requested the central government to remove GST from the business of kendu leaves and I am again raising the demand for complete abolition of the GST system,” he said.
