In 2023, winter has broken all temperature records. The cold has wreaked havoc all over the world. Recently, China’s northernmost city Mohe recorded its coldest day ever, while at least 157 people have died due to freezing cold in Afghanistan. These people died within 15 days. The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan has also confirmed this.

77 thousand cattle also died

According to the report of CNN, not only humans are dying due to cold, but till now 77,000 cattle have also died. The official spokesman of the State Disaster Management Ministry said that the temperature in Afghanistan has dropped to minus 28 degrees. According to the United Nations Human Rights (UNOCHA), 28.3 million people of the country, that is, about two-thirds of the population, need immediate help to stay alive. According to the BBC report, this is the coldest weather ever in a decade.

Contact lost in many areas due to snowfall

Acting Disaster Management Minister Mullah Mohammad Abbas Akhund told the BBC that many areas of Afghanistan are now completely cut off due to snowfall. Army helicopters have been sent to the rescue, but they have not been able to land in the most mountainous areas. However, the forecast for the next 10 days indicates that the temperature will go down and the weather will get warmer. Acting Minister Akhund says he is still concerned about the rising death toll of Afghans and their livestock.

15 years record broken

Mullah Akhund said, “Most of the people who lost their lives in the cold are herders or people living in rural areas. People died who did not have access to healthcare.” Let us tell you that winter in Afghanistan has always been very harsh but this is being said to be the worst season ever. According to the report of the news agency Reuters, there has not been such severe cold in Afghanistan in the last 15 years. The situation here has become critical due to the snow storm. The situation is serious in 8 out of 34 provinces of the country. The number of people who died of cold is the highest in these 8 provinces.
