FIFA World Cup 2022: We have the noise of T20 cricket here but at the moment there is noise of Football World Cup all over the world. After losing badly to England in the semi-finals, we may not discuss cricket for a few days now, but cricket is like a drug for us, which after a gap of some time again dominates the mind.

FIFA World Cup 2022 why Ignoring Football for Cricket craze

But at this time there is a football fever in the world. The reason for this is that the FIFA World Cup is going to start in Qatar from 20 November 2022. Football teams from selected 32 countries of the world are participating in this mega event.

While there is a craze behind cricket in India, other sports show a meager interest from the general public and the media. Regarding football, there is a dire situation here. The fraudulent politics of sports federations has spoiled the atmosphere. In the country of smoky football players like Sunil Chhetri and Bhaichung Bhutia, there is not even a team of rules, which is a big deal in the World Cup, can leave its mark in Asia as well.

The recent controversy over the fight over the All India Football Federation is exemplary. Angered by the court’s intervention, the world’s international football federation, FIFA, even suspended India’s membership for a few days.

In October last month, a women’s World Cup football tournament under the age of 17 was scheduled to be organized in India. Ahead of the event, FIFA was furious with the All India Football Federation initiating the process of change of leadership. Due to the controversy, the enthusiasm of the organizers remained cold.

The final match was played at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on 30 October amid less publicity. The Spanish girls performed brilliantly and captured the Junior FIFA World Cup by defeating Colombia. Being the organizing country, India got a special opportunity to play in the Junior Women’s FIFA World Cup for the first time. The performance of the girls of India was not impressive, but they did get the experience of playing at the international level.

We are in the craze of cricket, and the world is crazy about football. Football fans have started arriving in Qatar to watch their heroes Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo perform for the last time in the World Cup. Both the footballers are at that stage of age where people retire. The FIFA World Cup is held every four years. Next time hardly any of the two legends will be in the fray.

Those who could not afford to get expensive FIFA World Cup tickets and stay in Qatar, they are booking public events to show the match on the big screen in their area. The football craze is speaking loudly on the fans. The star players and supporters of the countries are full of enthusiasm and excitement. But we are missing from the ground of this great football tournament.

Well cricket is an expensive game. To play, arrangements have to be made for bat, ball, wicket, pad, gloves, helmet and inner guard. Therefore, systematically played cricket comes under the category of the game of the rich. The common poor make satisfaction by playing only improvised cricket. Whereas football is a common man’s game. What is needed is a field and two goal posts where 22 players are consistently displaying the physical stamina and tact to capture the momentum of a ball throughout the match.

After a boundary in football, the player becomes more important, not the nation. The leading goal scorers in world football include Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Robert Liwandowski who will play in this year’s World Cup.

Pele, counted among football’s all-time greats, was a Brazilian player, while Argentina’s star footballer Diego Maradona and Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazario are still remembered for their superb dribbling. Among other all-time greats, Johann Kroeff (Netherlands), Michael Platini and Zinedine Zidane (France) and Franz Beckenbauer (Germany) are still remembered by football fans for their artistic game.

The marketism spread by institutions like BCCI has kept India trapped in cricket itself. We are not ready to spend time watching any sport other than cricket just to get the romance of winning from Pakistan. The performance of our players in hockey, tennis and other sports does not come under discussion, because the media has linked cricket with unequaled nationalism.

In the memory of colonialism and the pain of Partition, we see cricket in the context of victory and defeat against Pakistan. Diplomacy is also prepared on this pitch that we will not go there and play any match until Pakistan improves, nor will we invite it here. But there is no harm in playing with Pakistan in other countries.

It is not that FIFA has less money than the International Cricket Club (ICC). Rather the truth is that there can be no comparison of the ICC budget with the income and expenditure of FIFA. The total prize money given to footballers for the FIFA World Cup 2022 is Rs 3,592 crore, while the prize money of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia is only Rs 45.71 million.

The final of the Cricket T20 World Cup will be played in Melbourne on 13 November. After this, the trumpet of the Football World Cup will sound in Qatar from 20 November. The FIFA final match will be played on 18 December. While the T20 World Cup winning team will get around Rs 13 crore in Indian currency, the FIFA World Cup winning team will get more than Rs 367 crore in their account.

Well, we are not able to watch anything except cricket. We keep thinking of creating new Tendulkar, Kohli and Dhoni all the time. The reason for this is that most of the income in cricket comes from the overseas Indian audience. Whether it is Melbourne or England, the most spectators of Indian origin reach the stadium to watch the match. Where cricket is played in the few countries of the world where Britain was a colony till the last century. Whereas the whole world dances to the tune of football with limited resources.
