South Korea impress with speed and agility
Korea got a corner in the first minute itself. But the Korean player’s header was blocked by the Uruguayan goalkeeper. For the first ten, eleven minutes, South Korea outplayed Uruguay with their speed and agility. To stop Korea’s fast attack, the Uruguayan players passed the time by making small passes in their own half for some time. In the 21st minute, Uruguay made a great move against South Korea. Pellistri completed a cross pass into the 6 yard box. (6 yard box – a rectangular box 6 yards from the goal post where the goalkeeper places the ball and takes the kick) The pass had only to be touched by his teammate Nunez and the ball would go into the goal. But Nunez delayed for a few seconds while taking the shot with his right foot, due to which he could not collect the ball. Had he only touched the ball with his left foot, Uruguay would have scored a goal.
Lack of commitment in both the teams
Neither team could score till half time. In terms of possession of the ball, both the teams remained equal. Uruguay got 3 corners while South Korea got 2. The match was tight in the first half. Even after half time, both the teams kept missing chances. Uruguay replaced their star player Luis Suarez in the 64th minute. Kawani came to play in his place. Neither team was in a scoring position till the 85th minute. There was a clear lack of commitment in them. There were many famous players in both the teams but they could not play according to their status. Till 90 the score remained 0-0. After this 7 minutes of injury time was added. Beom attacks from South Korea but his shot goes wide of the goalpost. Uruguay then launched a last-minute attack that was thwarted by Korean defenders.
Uruguay had defeated Korea twice before in the World Cup
Uruguay is the world champion twice (1930, 1950). While South Korea reached the semi-finals in 2002. The FIFA World Ranking of Uruguay is 14 and South Korea is 28. Earlier, there were two World Cup matches between Uruguay and South Korea. In the 1990 World Cup football, Uruguay defeated South Korea 1–0. In the 2010 World Cup, Uruguay won 2–1 against South Korea. Apart from this, if the Nehru Cup and friendship matches are combined, then there were 7 matches between the two, in which Uruguay won 6 and South Korea won one. South Korea beat Uruguay 2–1 for the first time in a 2018 friendly match.
