New Delhi, June 3: 18-year-old American tennis sensation Coco Gauff advanced to her maiden Grand Slam final by defeating Italy’s Martina Trevison in the women’s singles semifinal at the French Open on Thursday. Gauff will next face world No. 1 Inga Swietec.

Coco Gauff registered a thumping victory against veteran clay-courter Trevison. Overcoming her initial nervousness, she managed to win the women’s singles semi-final 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and 28 minutes.

With this, Coco Gauff became the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004. She is also the youngest finalist at Roland Garros in 21 years.

When asked about the final against Sweetek, Gauff drew applause with his reply. “There’s a lot of terrible things going on in the world right now, so I think it’s important not to stress about a tennis match,” he said during an on-court interview.

Coco Gauff, who won the Roland Garros Girls’ singles title in 2018, has been in great form at this year’s clay-court Grand Slam. The teenager defeated Sloane Stephens in the All-American quarterfinal match on Thursday.

Gough initially appeared a bit nervous on the court. Travisson, with his forehand hitting pace, showed Gauff a bit nervous but once he found his rhythm, there was no stopping him.

Travisson’s racquet led to errors, especially in the second set when Gough struggled for every point, putting incredible pressure on the Italian’s service game. Trevison made 35 unexpected mistakes in the second set.
