The Supreme Court on Monday, while hearing a petition filed regarding forced conversion, said that the matter should not be given a political colour. It is worth noting that Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay has filed a petition in the Supreme Court regarding forced conversion. The Supreme Court has appealed to Attorney General R Venkataramani to give his suggestions in this matter by 7 February. Supreme Court judges Justice MR Shah and CT Ravikumar have agreed to name the matter suo motu. Ashwini Kumar’s petition was opposed by the Tamil Nadu government, which stated that the religious conversion was politically motivated. In fact, last year a 17-year-old girl committed suicide in Tamil Nadu after her parents alleged that the school forced her to convert.
