“It is not good for women to sit and wait on the streets for days for a 20 kg bag of flour. A large number of us women also sit for many hours at different places to buy flour. Where will she go if someone needs to urinate? It’s not a matter of respect, is it?”

This is to say of 70-year-old Imam Bibi of Barauri Road area in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, who despite waiting for several hours in front of Quetta railway station on Monday, could not get the bag of flour available at the government rate.

For the past several days, news is being received from different areas of Pakistan about non-availability of flour at government rates.

The flour crisis has deepened in Balochistan for the last two weeks. Because of this, the cost of a 20 kg bag of flour has increased to 2800 Pakistani rupees in the capital Quetta. At the same time, its price has reached the highest level of Rs 3,200 in other areas of the state.

Imam Bibi told about the difficulties being faced by those who want to buy flour at government rates, that she has been running for the last two weeks to buy cheap flour for her children, but He is getting continuous failure.

She says, “My two children are disabled and the others are small. One is an earner who works as a labourer. The wage also sometimes comes and sometimes does not come. I myself work at home.

For the last 8 days the children are hungry and I myself am able to feed the children little by little by demanding from the people of the locality because flour is expensive in the shops and cheap flour is not easily available.”

Imam Bibi says that she comes from a long distance on foot. Those who come to buy cheap flour are sometimes told that the flour vehicle will come on the Joint Road, sometimes they say Chaman Gate and sometimes they are told the address of the railway station. But when people reach there running, nothing is found.

According to him, if flour is not available after a long wait, people forcefully block the road after which policemen come.

“We were picked up twice by the police from the protest, but despite being assured, we did not get government flour.”

It was very difficult to get government flour

Imam Bibi is not the only one who is facing trouble in trying to get flour at the government rate, but all the old people like her or those who run their families by doing hard labor are troubled by this.

Among them is Khudaye Nazar, an old man who has cycled from Bhusa Mandi, the eastern bypass area, about eight kilometers from Quetta, to the Quetta railway station at five in the morning in spite of severe cold so that he can get a place at the beginning of the queue there.

Despite waiting for seven hours, when it was announced that the car with cheap flour would not come there, the disappointment and resentment was clearly visible on Khuda Nazar’s face.

He says, “I work hard to feed my family of 10 people. Because of sitting here waiting for flour, I am neither able to work nor can I get cheap flour, for which I leave the wages. .”

He says, “I came at five o’clock in this bitter winter to get a place at the beginning of the line and offered morning prayer in the mosque of the railway station. I have been coming for 10 days for a bag of cheap flour, but I have not got the flour.” not found.”

“Believe me, I cannot buy expensive flour from the market, so I am coming here to buy cheap flour, but I could not find it. For ten days we have been surviving on rice, which is too much for us poor people compared to flour. It’s getting expensive.”

Skyrocketing price of flour in Pakistan

20 kg flour bag costlier by Rs 700 in two weeks

Due to the shortage of flour in Balochistan for the last two-three years, its price has been increasing continuously, but the Balochistan government and the people associated with the flour business say that this time the situation is more serious.

Syed Khudaidad Agha, president of the Balochistan Flour Dealers Association, told the BBC that the price of a 20 kg bag has increased by Rs 500 in just one week, while it has increased by more than Rs 700 in the last one and a half to two weeks.

On the reasons for the current flour crisis, Badruddin Kakar, former president of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association, told the BBC: “Balochistan needs 15 million bags of 100 kg each according to its current population, while the annual production of wheat in Balochistan is 10 million bags.” is approximately.”

“Though the production of wheat in Balochistan is not very low, but here people do not have any system to keep it safe for a long time, due to which they try to sell it as soon as possible.”

Where is the fault with the governments

“In the current year, the Balochistan government delayed the purchase of wheat. Apart from this, the price fixed by the Government of Sindh for the purchase of wheat was higher than the rate in Balochistan, due to which the farmers of Nasirabad division sold their wheat in Sindh.

He said that in the current financial year, the Balochistan government could buy five lakh bags of wheat during four months, which was negligible according to the demand.

Balochistan’s Food Department official Jabir Baloch told the BBC that due to the rise in the dollar rate and the war between Russia and Ukraine, the price of wheat on the open market was much higher than the government rate, so farmers sold their wheat to private players. .

Flour mill owners and flour dealers are putting the responsibility of the exorbitant increase in the price of flour in Balochistan on the government of Balochistan along with Sindh and Punjab.

Balochistan’s Food Minister Engineer Zamruk Khan blamed the government of Punjab and Sindh apart from the central government and said that both the state governments along with the center have refused to give wheat to Balochistan.

According to the Food Minister, Balochistan is currently in a difficult situation, so the central government as well as the government of Punjab and Sindh should not leave it alone.

appeal to the government

Zafarullah, director general of the Food Department, told the BBC that although the annual wheat production in Balochistan’s Nasirabad division is 10 million bags, this year the wheat crop in Nasirabad has decreased by 30 percent due to bad weather.

He said that apart from this, there was a delay in releasing money from the Finance Department to the Food Department.

He says, “If we get the money, we will be able to buy. We got the money at the end of April. Since farmers have to meet other expenses apart from repaying the loan, they sell their crops early.”

Appealing to the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers of Sindh and Punjab, he said that they should not leave Balochistan alone in this difficult time.
