Different countries are running a campaign to save the environment, such a campaign is being run in India too, but this campaign does not seem to be meaningful at the global level. Talking about 180 countries in terms of environment, India is at the lowest rank in it. India is at the bottom of the Environmental Performance Index in the year 2022. Denmark ranks first in this list, Denmark has been recognized as the most stable country.

What is EPI
Explain that EPI releases its index after every two years. It ranks each country on the basis of its efforts in the field of environment. This rank is mainly based on three issues, first is ecosystem vitality, second is health and third is climate policy. On the basis of these the ranks of the countries are determined. This index was started in 2002. It works closely with the World Economic Forum, the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, and the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network. The 2022 joint project is the Yale Center and the Columbia Earth Institute.

At the policy level, instead of strengthening the laws related to the environment, the government is making new laws, so that the existing policies can be weakened. The Coastal Regulation Zone, Wildlife Act is meant to prevent mining in the forest, which is under threat. Instead of saving the environment, the government is taking the industry forward. The Western Ghats are in danger due to industrial projects. There is very little concern for the creatures here.

India’s situation is worrying
Concerns have also been expressed in the report regarding water in the country. A large number of borewells have been allowed in India, in the last 10 years, India has been consistently lagging behind in the list of EPI. At this time when other countries are shying away from the use of coal, India has increased its dependence on it, due to which the emission of carbon dioxide has increased, which is a matter of concern and will be a major factor in achieving the country’s goal in the field of environment. is an obstacle. The EPI report says that by 2050, the four countries India, China, the US and Russia alone will be responsible for 50 per cent of greenhouse gases, if emissions continue at the current rate.
