If anyone is caught carrying luggage more than the prescribed weight, then they will be charged up to 6 times the normal rate.

According to the Luggage Rules of the Railways, railway passengers can carry baggage weighing between 35 kg and 70 kg per ticket. This weight is dependent on the compartment for which they have booked their ticket. However, if the baggage exceeds the limit set by the Railways, additional charges may be levied from the passengers. The minimum charge for luggage is fixed at Rs 30.

The relaxation in the weight of luggage per passenger given by the Railways is – AC First Class – 70 kg (additional 15 kg to a maximum of 150 kg is allowed on charge), AC-2 Tier / First Class – 50 kg (Extra 10 kg to a maximum of 100 kg per charge is allowed), AC-3 Tier / AC Chair Car – 40 kg (additional 10 kg to a maximum of 80 kg on charge is allowed), Sleeper Class – 40 kg (Extra 10 kg on charge to a maximum of 80 kg is allowed) and Second Class – 35 kg (additional 10 kg on charge to a maximum of 70 kg is allowed).

If the passengers have more baggage than the permissible limit, then they can book their luggage at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train at the Luggage Office of the boarding station. You can also book luggage in advance while booking tickets. For this, you have to pay the parcel booking prescribed by the railways, but you can travel with confidence.
