New York, 22 September.
New York City of America witnessed a memorable evening today. In fact, two such people coming from India here spoke about the suffering of child laborers in front of global leaders, who were once child laborers themselves. One of them was 20-year-old Kajal Kumari from Jharkhand and 22-year-old Kinshu Kumar living in Rajasthan. This was the historic occasion of the ‘Transforming Education Summit’ of the United Nations.

Addressing the Nobel Laureates and Global Leaders at the ‘Laureates and Leaders for Children Summit’ in the US, Kajal and Kinshu raised their voices on child labour, child marriage, child abuse and child education. He said, “Education is like a key to a bright future of children. Only by this they can escape from child labour, child abuse, child marriage and poverty. Many global figures including Nobel Peace Prize winner Lima Jibovi, former Swedish Prime Minister Stephen Löwen and well-known child rights activist Kerry Kennedy were present on the occasion.

Laureates and Leaders for Children is a one-of-a-kind forum in the world where Nobel Laureates and global leaders converge on children’s issues and plan their future course of action. This platform is the gift of Nobel Peace Prize awardee Kailash Satyarthi. Its mission is to create a world in which all children are safe, free, healthy and educated.

Today even though Kajal is the president of the Bal Panchayat in Bal Mitra village and working as a child leader, she was once a child laborer in the mica mine. Sharing her experience as a child laborer in Domchanch village of Jharkhand’s Koderma district, Kajal said, “It is very important to eradicate child labor and child marriage from all over the world as both of them ruin the lives of children. It inflicts unforgettable wounds on the soft mind and soul of children.

He has taken the responsibility of connecting the people of Kajal village with government schemes on his shoulders. So far, she has got 35 children freed from the trap of child labor of Mica Mine. Kajal has stopped three child marriages so far. When schools were closed during the Corona period, it played an important role in providing online education to children.

Badku Marandi and Champa Kumari of Jharkhand have also raised their voice against child labor on the international stage. Champa also received the prestigious Diana Award of England. Both these children had been child laborers in the past. As a child, Kajal was forced to work as a picketer in Mica Mine to help her family financially. At the age of 14, Bal Mitra village took him out of the job of picking a dhibri and got him enrolled in the school.

Actually, Balmitra Village is an innovative social experiment of Kailash Satyarthi. Its objective is to make the children exploitation free and fix the education and safety of the children in collaboration with the Panchayats and the community. These are especially to protect children from crimes against children such as child marriage, child abuse, child labour, bonded labor and sexual exploitation.
