The Indian Navy will commission Vagir, the fifth submarine of the Kalvari class, on Monday, 23 January. Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar will attend the ceremony as the chief guest. The submarine built under Project-75 is being included in the Navy’s combat capability at a time when China is increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean region. Six submarines are being built under Project-75. Four submarines of the ongoing Project-75 Scorpene program at MDL, Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj and Vela have been inducted into the Indian Navy. The fifth submarine Vagir is to be commissioned today. While the sixth and last submarine ‘Vagshir’ will also undergo sea trials after launching.

The Scorpene class can perform missions similar to submarines, such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, area surveillance, etc.

These submarines are being built in India by M/s Naval Group (France) at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai. MDL handed over this submarine to the Navy in November 2022.

Scorpene submarines are extremely powerful platforms, have advanced stealth features and are armed with long-range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles. These submarines have state-of-the-art sonar and sensor suites. Which enhances operational capabilities.

Prior to this, the Vagir submarine was first commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 November 1973, participating in several operations throughout its 30-year career. The submarine was decommissioned in January 2001 after serving the nation for almost three decades.
