Bastar’s Chendru and Tembu are famous all over the world
Heroic legends are still prevalent in tribal areas around the world. In the dense forest of Abujhmad in Chhattisgarh, people of many tribes of tribals still live, who know how to save the stories of their valor. Growing up among these tribals, Chendru is known all over the world as ‘The Tiger Boy Chendru’. Chendru died in the year 2013 at the age of 78, but the story of the friendship of Tiger and Chendru is still famous all over the world.
The film made on Tiger Boy won the Oscar
In fact, in the year 1957, a Hollywood film was made on Chendru. At that time Chenderu was only 10 years old. It was shown in the film how a small tribal child, Chendru and Tiger live together as friends. The name of this film is ‘The Jungle Saga’, which was made by the famous Swedish filmmaker Aren Saksdorf. This film has been liked by the people so much that in view of its success, it also got an Oscar award. The whole world saw the 75-minute film ‘The Jungle Saga’ and became a fan of Chendru.
People used to reach Bastar from all over the world for a picture
Today, people call Chendru the Mowgli of Chhattisgarh, inspired by the famous character Mongli from The Jungle Book. But it is true that having a 10-year-old boy who befriends a lion was really nothing short of a surprise. It is said that even when Chendru grew up, he used to be friends with tigers. Chendru Mandavi spent most of his time with the lions. Chendru and his Tiger friend used to hang out together, eat food and play together. In the 80s, Chendru had become so popular that people from many countries including France, Sweden, Britain used to reach Bastar to take the picture of Chenderu Mandavi.
Tiger friend came home in the basket
Chendru Mandavi was a member of a tribal family living in Garhbengal village of Narayanpur district of Bastar, which is covered with dense forests. Tiger Boy’s father and grandfather were hunters. One day he brought a cub of a lion from the forest by keeping it in a bamboo basket. Seeing the little lion cub, Chendru became happy and he always kept it with him like his brother. Chendru and Sher’s friendship grew stronger. He named his lion Tembu, with whom he always lived.

Director Aren Saksdorf, who made the film on Chendru, wanted Chenderu to see the place from where he had come. He took Chendru with him to Sweden, where they lived almost together, after which he returned to India. After returning, Chendru Mandavi reached Mumbai, where he also met the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The Prime Minister asked the boy Chendru to study, but on the invitation of his father, he returned to his village.
There was a shock after the death of Tiger, died at the age of 78
When Chendru Mandavi returned to his home, his tiger friend Tambu died a few days later. After the departure of a Tiger friend like his brother, Chendru started feeling sad, he also started getting sick, then gradually he became anonymous. Living a life of oblivion, Chendru Mandavi died in 2013 at the age of 78.
In the jungle safari located in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, their idol has been installed in memory of Tembu and Chendru, while a park has also been built in Narayanpur in the name of Chendru. Even though Chendru is not there today, Chhattisgarh Tourism Board has also made a memento in his memory.
