Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju: Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said that after becoming a judge, he does not face election or public scrutiny amid the collegium dispute between the Center and the judiciary. A day after his statement in the program of Delhi Bar Association, now the Law Minister has given his reaction on the intelligence report received by the Supreme Court Collegium being made public. Kiren Rijiju has called it a matter of serious concern.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said the Supreme Court Collegium’s disclosure of RAW and IB’s inputs on the appointment of judges in high courts is a “matter of serious concern”. He said he will react to it at an appropriate time. He was replying to questions on some of the recent resolutions of the Supreme Court Collegium reiterating names for appointment as High Court judges.

Rijiju said, “The disclosure of secret inputs of RAW and IB (on Jones’s appointment to the High Court) is a matter of grave concern. I will respond appropriately when the time comes. Today is not the appropriate time.” Law Minister Rijiju further said that intelligence agencies work in secret for the country and if their reports are put in the public domain, they will think twice before doing so in future.

When asked whether he would take it up with the Chief Justice, the minister said, “The Chief Justice and I meet often. We are always in touch. He is the head of the judiciary, I am the bridge between the government and the judiciary.” We have to work together – we cannot work in isolation. This is a contentious issue… leave it for some other day.” Let us tell you that this comment of the Law Minister has come at a time when there is a difference of opinion between the government and the judiciary regarding the process of appointment of judges in the higher judiciary.
