Preparation to reach Mars by 2027
According to the report, the US is working very fast on the construction of a spacecraft that runs on the power of nuclear fusion, which will reduce the estimated time to travel to Mars from 9 months to just 4 months. NASA said on Tuesday that it is partnering with the US military research and development agency DARPA to develop nuclear thermal propulsion engines by the year 2027 and to carry out space-based missions through it. Let us tell you that NASA has been working on the concept of nuclear thermal propulsion engine for a long time.
What is Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Engine Concept?
According to NASA, in the nuclear thermal propulsion engine concept, the heat released from a nuclear fusion reactor is introduced into the hydrogen propellant to provide thrust. The energy generated in the process is believed to be far more powerful than the chemical-based rocket engines currently in use. The journey from Earth to Mars takes about 9 months with conventional chemical-based rocket engines. But traveling with nuclear thermal propulsion technology, this time will be reduced to less than half, i.e. just 4 months. NASA believes that it is important to send humans deep into space.
Revolution in the world of space
The reduction in travel time would mean that astronauts would be exposed to space radiation for less time and would need to carry a lot of baggage (food and other essential items) with them. NASA deputy administrator and former astronaut Pam Melroy was quoted as saying by Reuters that “if we have fast vehicles for human space travel, those trips will be safe.” This space program, in which NASA is now also involved, is part of the current DARPA research program. It can also play an important role in transferring satellites orbiting near the Moon to the US Space Force.
Many companies are working
Let us tell you that Blue Origin, the space company of General Atomics, Lockheed Martin and Jeff Bezos, was allocated a budget in 2021 to study the design of nuclear reactors and spacecraft. Program manager Tabitha Dodson told Reuters news agency that NASA would select one of these companies to build the nuclear spacecraft for demonstration by March 2027. Let us tell you that many programs are going on in America regarding Mars, in which Elon Musk has a program to send humans to Mars.
