New Delhi, 13 September: Mark Boucher, a former South African wicketkeeper and a legendary figure for his country’s team, is all set to step down as the head coach of the Proteas team after the 2022 T20 World Cup. Cricket South Africa has given this information on Monday, 12 September. The decision comes hours after South Africa lost the 3-Test series. England won the series 2-1. South Africa, despite winning the first match of the series, lost the latter two matches.

According to CSA, Mark Boucher is exploring his future career prospects and looking at other opportunities for himself. Even media reports suggest that the former wicketkeeper is in talks with the Indian Premier League for the head coach’s role.

Boucher took over as coach from Ottis Gibson in December 2019 and signed a four-year deal. He was expected to be with the team till the 2023 World Cup in India but will now bid farewell earlier.

Boucher led the Proteas to 11 Test victories, 12 ODIs and 23 T20I victories. Under Boucher’s leadership, South Africa made a spectacular comeback to beat India 2-1 earlier this year.

As coach of South Africa, Boucher will play his last bilateral series in the 3-match T20I and ODI series against India in September-October.

Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe said: “We are deeply saddened by Mark’s decision to leave us but we understand and respect his wishes. He is a Proteas legend and has played for our country on the field and for the last three years. A lot has been done over the years, which we greatly appreciate.

“They have created a good platform for South Africa to thrive in all three formats and I am sure we will see results in the T20 World Cup next month. The CSA said Boucher’s successor would be decided in due course.
