Mainpuri seat vacated by Mulayam’s death
In fact, the Mainpuri parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, Rampur and Khatauli assembly seats are going to be held by-elections after the disqualification of the sitting MLAs – SP’s Azam Khan and BJP’s Vikram Saini. . SP will contest on these three seats. SP has decided to field Akhilesh Yadav’s wife and former MP Dimple Yadav in Mainpuri. However, the candidate for Rampur and Khatauli has not been announced by the party yet.
Congress-BSP distanced itself from by-elections
Sources in the BSP and Congress said that both the parties are considering to stay away from these bypolls due to “strategic reasons” and will focus on the upcoming local body polls. The contest will be a repeat of the bypolls to the Gola Gokaran Nath assembly seat and Rampur Lok Sabha seat where the BJP comprehensively defeated the SP in the absence of the BSP and the Congress. Earlier, the BSP had not fielded its candidates in the by-elections held in Rampur Lok Sabha seat, but in Azamgarh, it had caused a lot of damage to the SP by contesting Guddu Jamali.
Strategy to remove Muslim vote bank from SP
BSP chief Mayawati’s decision to stay away from Mainpuri is in stark contrast to her strategy for the Azamgarh bypoll, where she had fielded a local Muslim candidate, Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali. In this election Dharmendra Yadav of SP was defeated by Dinesh Lal Nirahua of BJP. Experts say that if BJP wins, Mayawati will be able to send a message to Muslim voters that SP cannot defeat the saffron party.
Mayawati in search of Dalit-Muslim votes
Analysts said this would help the Dalit leader position himself more tactfully and seek both Dalit and Muslim votes in the local body elections and later in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress’s decision to stay away from the upcoming by-polls is similar to its decision not to field candidates in Yadav’s stronghold. The party did not field any candidate in Mainpuri in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After this he again refrained from contesting against SP chief Akhilesh Yadav in Karhal in the 2022 assembly elections. However, the party fielded Nawab Kazim Ali Khan against Azam Khan in Rampur in 2022.
SP trying to defeat BJP
Experts say that the Samajwadi Party hopes that this time it will defeat the BJP in Mainpuri and Rampur. At the same time, there could be a tough fight in Khatauli where the BJP had to face a fight with the SP ally Rashtriya Lok Dal in the 2022 assembly elections. BJP sources said that after the meeting of the High Power Core Committee with CM Yogi Adityanath on Thursday, the party may send the names of possible candidates to the central leadership.
