What is measles?

The virus belongs to the paramyxovirus family, which first affects the respiratory tract and then spreads through the blood to other parts of the body.

A symptom of measles is a rash or rash that stays on the body for up to 7 days. The rash usually appears on the scalp and gradually spreads throughout the body.

Vaccination is the only way to prevent measles. It can be avoided only by getting vaccinated. To eliminate measles and rubella, India launched a state-wide vaccination campaign in 2017 for all children in the age group of 9 months to 15 years. Infected adults and children should be isolated for four days after the rash appears.

According to WHO, measles is increasing continuously in India. Till September 2022, 11,156 cases of measles were registered in the country. Children with poor nutrition are more prone to it. Not getting a vaccine to prevent this is also a big reason. Pregnant women are also at high risk of measles. This includes people who have not received the MR (Measles Rubella) vaccine.
