Syed Mohsin Naqvi has taken oath as the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab. The Election Commission has issued a notification appointing him as the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab.

Mohsin Naqvi From CNN Journalist to Acting CM of Pakistani Punjab

Syed Mohsin Naqvi, who belongs to the Syed family of Jhang, was born in 1978 in Lahore.

After receiving primary education from Crescent Model School, he enrolled in Government College (GC) Lahore and after graduating from there, he went to Ohio University, USA for higher education.

He obtained a journalism degree from America, after which he completed an internship at the American news channel CNN.

CNN sent him as a producer to do news coverage in Pakistan, where he achieved promotion at an early age and became the ‘Regional Head South Asia’.

It was the period of war against terrorism i.e. ‘War on Terror’ when after the 9/11 attacks, foreign forces under the leadership of America turned to Afghanistan. In those days, Mohsin Naqvi was reporting for CNN and during this time he also established relations with important personalities.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he was with CNN until 2009.

Mohsin Naqvi established City News Network in 2009 at the age of just 31 and made a mark in the profession of journalism.

Later City News Network launched 24 News Digital for national news, City 41 for Faisalabad, Rohi TV for South Punjab, City 21 for Karachi and ‘UK 44’ for Pakistanis living abroad.

This organization also started a local newspaper ‘Daily City 42’ from Lahore.

As the owner of a media channel, he is known as a person who takes care of his colleagues and tries to give them better opportunities.

Apart from being the owner of a private channel, Syed Mohsin Naqvi is also a well-known personality in political circles.

According to journalist Majid Nizami, “Mohsin Naqvi is the son-in-law of late SSP Ashraf Marth, husband of Chaudhary Parvez Elahi’s niece and brother-in-law of Salik Hussain, son of Muslim League-Q chief Chaudhary Shujaat.”

Mohsin Naqvi is considered very close to People’s Party leader Asif Ali Zardari.

According to Majid Nizami, it was he who persuaded Chaudhary Shujaat to hold talks with PDM.

Mohsin Naqvi’s name was included in two names sent by opposition leader Hamza Shahbaz for the caretaker chief minister.

It has been alleged by PTI that Mohsin Naqvi is close to the parties associated with PDM and can harm their election campaign by influencing the elections in the state.

In an interview to a private channel on Saturday, Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan refused to accept Mohsin Naqvi as the chief minister and accused him of being the person who gave us PML-N (Muslim League -Nawaz) has caused more damage.

In a tweet, he had said that PMLN has a history of choosing its own umpires but what is unbelievable is how the Election Commission chose a staunch enemy of PTI as the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab.

He says that this post is for a neutral person. The Election Commission of Pakistan has joined hands in making a mockery of our democracy. I will hold a press conference so that all this fraud can be exposed.

A few days ago, Monis Elahi shared his picture in a tweet and wrote, “This is the man who used to say that I am Zardari’s child, Shahbaz Sharif’s partner and Chaudhary’s relative.” I will take decisions of Pakistan.

Chaudhary Parvez Elahi has refused to accept his appointment. He has alleged that ‘how can justice be expected from the person who did plea bargaining of Rs 35 lakh in the Harris Steel case’.

He further said, “How can my closest relative become the caretaker Chief Minister? The disputed decision of the Election Commission is against every rule and law. We are going to the Supreme Court against this decision of the Election Commission.”

While Senator Shibli Faraz has said that his appointment proves, “Criminals are hiring criminals to commit crimes.”

On the other hand, some circles have also welcomed his appointment.

As said by federal minister Khwaja Saad Rafiq, “Democrat, fearless, defender of fundamental rights, follower of constitution and law, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi has been appointed as caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab.”

To keep the freedom of the press paramount, Mohsin Naqvi has happily faced oppression many times.

It is also worth mentioning that some circles have criticized him on social media regarding his school of thought. Former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar says, “Which country is there where the caretaker chief minister’s face is seen before his appointment. This is not Jinnah’s Pakistan.”

Journalist Asima Shirazi says, ‘A political party and its workers are running a very cheap and baseless campaign against senior journalist and owner of Channel 24, Mohsin Naqvi, due to which his life can also be in danger.
