New Delhi, August 08 : The monsoon session of Parliament ended four days ahead of schedule. Both the Houses of Parliament adjourned sine die. Today Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu was given farewell in the House in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top leaders. Naidu will step down on Wednesday and his successor Jagdeep Dhankhar will take oath on August 11.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Venkaiah Naidu’s farewell said that he appreciated his wisdom and the one-liners used during the meeting. PM Modi praised Naidu’s five-year tenure as the chairman. He said during Naidu’s tenure “the productivity of the House increased by 70 per cent”.

PM Modi lauded Naidu, saying the outgoing Speaker encouraged dialogue and set the standard and legacy that would guide his successors. Let us tell you that Naidu is completing his five-year term on August 10.

In his final remarks as the Chairman and Vice President of the Rajya Sabha, he said, ‘We are not enemies, we are rivals. We should work hard to beat others in the competition but should not let others down. I wish Parliament works well… I am grateful and impressed by your love and affection.

The members, during the farewell of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday, said they were allowed to speak in their native languages. Some opposition members even urged him to write an autobiography. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge also lauded Naidu. He said Naidu did a great job despite being “under pressure”.

The government and the opposition have been face to face on many issues during the entire session which started on 18 July. The issues of uproar included inflation, alleged misuse of central agencies against opposition leaders. During the second week, 24 MPs (20 MPs from Rajya Sabha and 4 from Lok Sabha) were suspended. However, the suspension of the Lok Sabha members was later revoked.
