In 2020 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled all ranitidine products (injectable and oral) following the revelation of low-level N nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) presence. According to a study published by the Indian Journal of Pharmacology, N-nitrosamines are associated with cancer of the stomach, esophagus, nasopharynx and bladder. Hence it was again taken out of the list.
34 drugs included in the list
At the same time, 34 drugs have been included in NLEM, including some anti-infection drugs like ivermectin, mupirocin and nicotine replacement therapy, taking a total of 384 drugs under this. The endocrine drugs and contraceptives fludrocortisone, ormeloxifene, insulin glargine and teneliglitin have also been added to the list, news agency PTI said. Montelukast and the ophthalmic drug latanoprost are also included in the list.
Patients will no longer spend much money
The cardiac drugs dabigatran and tenecteplase are also involved, the PTI report said. The health minister also announced prices on commonly used drugs and said that some antibiotics, vaccines and anti-cancer drugs would no longer cost patients much money.
The company will not be able to increase the price
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that the National List of Essential Medicines has been released today. Based on the same, the National Pharma Pricing Authority will decide its selling price. No company will increase the price of essential medicines on its own.
