New Delhi, June 10: The Kiwis suffered a major setback on the eve of the second Test against England in Nottingham as their captain Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the second Test after being hit by the Covid-19. The Kovid test of Kane Williamson, running from poor form, came positive. Coach Gary Stead said that Williamson has started a 5-day quarantine, the good thing is that the Kovid test of the rest of the team was negative.

Tom Latham will replace Kane Williamson as New Zealand’s captain for the second Test. Experienced opener Hamish Rutherford has also been included in the team.

“It is a pity for Kane to be forced to leave on the eve of such an important match. We all feel bad for him at this point and know how disappointed he will be,” Stead said.

Williamson took a rapid antigen test on Thursday after experiencing minor symptoms, while the rest of the team returned negative results in the RAT PCR test.

Williamson’s departure will be a major blow to New Zealand’s chances of making a comeback in the 3-match Test series. The World Test champions, having lost the opening match at Lord’s earlier this week. Williamson, who has been battling poor form since the IPL itself, struggled in the first match of the Test series as well and scored just 17 runs in two innings. Notably, the captain was returning to play Test cricket due to an elbow injury. Injury kept him out for a long time.

New Zealand will also miss Colin de Grandhomme as the prolific all-rounder has also been ruled out of the series due to a leg injury during the first Test. Mitchell Bracewell has been included in the team in his place.
