New Delhi, 07 June.
Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the day of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. This is the biggest Ekadashi of the year. Those who want to start fasting on Ekadashis throughout the year should start fasting from this day itself. This Ekadashi will be celebrated for two days this time. Ekadashi date will start from 7.28 am on 10th June and will remain till 5.47 am on 11th June. Since the Ekadashi date is falling on 11th June at the time of sunrise, the Vaishnavites will observe Ekadashi on 11th June, while the smart believers will celebrate Ekadashi on 10th June. On the day of Nirjala Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu should offer mango nectar.
The scriptures say that by performing Nirjala Ekadashi, the merit of all the Ekadashis of the year can be obtained. Its fast should be done according to the complete classical law. It is called Nirjala Ekadashi because even water is not consumed on this day. This fast has to be done while remaining completely waterless. It is also called Pandava Ekadashi or Bhimseni Ekadashi, because it was performed by Pandu son Bhima during the Mahabharata period.
Fasting Story of Nirjala Ekadashi
According to the legend, all the Pandavas and Draupadi were the ultimate devotees of Lord Vishnu. He used to fast for all Ekadashis of the year, but Bhima could not fast for any Ekadashi because he could not stay hungry. Due to inability to bear hunger, he did not fast and that is why there was always a pain in his mind that he was disrespecting Lord Vishnu by not fasting on Ekadashi. To overcome this problem, Bhimsen went to Maharishi Vyas and told his pain. Maharishi Vyas told Bhimsen that even if you cannot fast on all Ekadashis of the year, you must observe at least one Nirjala Ekadashi fast, if you do it with full devotion and scriptural method, then you will get the merit of all Ekadashis. Bhimsen was convinced that it is better to unite than to do 24 Ekadashi. Bhimsen fasted with all the brothers on Nirjala Ekadashi. Since then Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.
