Nirjala Ekadashi 2022: Nirjala Ekadashi will be celebrated for two days

The scriptures say that by performing Nirjala Ekadashi, the merit of all the Ekadashis of the year can be obtained. Its fast should be done according to the complete classical law. It is called Nirjala Ekadashi because even water is not consumed on this day. This fast has to be done while remaining completely waterless. It is also called Pandava Ekadashi or Bhimseni Ekadashi, because it was performed by Pandu son Bhima during the Mahabharata period.

Fasting Story of Nirjala Ekadashi

According to the legend, all the Pandavas and Draupadi were the ultimate devotees of Lord Vishnu. He used to fast for all Ekadashis of the year, but Bhima could not fast for any Ekadashi because he could not stay hungry. Due to inability to bear hunger, he did not fast and that is why there was always a pain in his mind that he was disrespecting Lord Vishnu by not fasting on Ekadashi. To overcome this problem, Bhimsen went to Maharishi Vyas and told his pain. Maharishi Vyas told Bhimsen that even if you cannot fast on all Ekadashis of the year, you must observe at least one Nirjala Ekadashi fast, if you do it with full devotion and scriptural method, then you will get the merit of all Ekadashis. Bhimsen was convinced that it is better to unite than to do 24 Ekadashi. Bhimsen fasted with all the brothers on Nirjala Ekadashi. Since then Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.
