The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken a major decision to eliminate discrimination on the basis of gender in educational institutions. KSCPCR has instructed all schools in the state to address school teachers only as teachers and not as sir or madam. In fact, the child rights panel had filed a petition saying that discrimination on the basis of gender should be abolished by saying Sir Madam. After which the KSCPCR has instructed the schools of the state to call the school teachers only teachers and not sir or madam.

Kerala Child Rights Panel said that there is no gender discrimination in teachers. A bench of panel chairpersons KV Manoj Kumar and C Vijayakumar directed the General Education Department to direct all schools to address everyone in the school as teacher, not sir or madam. The commission said that by calling teachers instead of sir or madam, we can promote equality among children in school. This will increase everyone’s attachment towards the teachers.

It is worth noting that in 2021 also a similar decision was taken by the local Gram Panchayat in Kerala. This decision was taken to eliminate the hindrance among the common people. The Mathur Gram Panchayat of Kerala became the first Gram Panchayat in the country where the ban on saying Sir or Madam was imposed. By taking such a decision, an attempt has been made to eliminate gender discrimination in the Gram Panchayat.

Mathur Panchayat Vice President PR Prasad said that rising above politics, everyone in our Panchayat welcomed this decision to create a good and friendly environment in the office. We all feel that calling sir or madam increases the distance. Now instead of sir or madam, people call everyone as teacher.
