Bhubaneswar: The sports infrastructure in Odisha has undergone a sea change in the recent years. During an interview, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of Sports and Youth Services Department and OSD to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, R Vinil Krishna spoke on the subject.
R Vineel Krishna said, ‘The Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar was the host of the 2018 Hockey World Cup. HWC 2023 is being organized in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. The State Government has developed a new world-class stadium with best-in-class facilities for the players and staff along with a World Cup Village in the Steel City. The Kalinga Stadium has also been renovated with additional facilities.
“Apart from the grand opening ceremony in Cuttack on Wednesday, several sports and cultural events have been organized in both the host cities,” he said. A massive engagement program has also been planned across the state during the World Cup period to make the event a memorable one for everyone. We had trophy tours, and competitions at panchayat level, urban areas, schools and colleges. The World Cup Trophy toured all the districts and after entering Odisha, it was given a warm welcome in most of the states. Chief ministers of all states have been invited to be a part of the historic event.
Vinil Krishna further added, “We are developing 21 hockey training centers with synthetic turf as part of our legacy. Two state-of-the-art training centers are being opened at Cuttack and Chhatrapur. There are no plans for hockey stadiums as of now. Hockey training centers are being set up in Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Jajpur and Ganjam.
“Five synthetic turfs are being laid in Rourkela alone. Perhaps no other city in the country has so many turfs for hockey. The synthetic turf removed from the Kalinga Stadium is being re-inserted at the upcoming training centers in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Two cricket stadiums – one at Puri and the other at Berhampur are almost ready. There is a swimming pool and a big weightlifting hall in the Berhampur stadium complex.
