New Delhi, 12 September. The great importance of charity has been told in the Hindu scriptures. Donation means not only donating material things, but giving up one’s ego, anger, attachment, lust is also charity. In fact, by donating, a person gets rid of the sins of material place and attains virtuous fruit and after death, enjoys the pleasures according to the charity work. Mahadaan must be done for the ancestors during Shradh Paksha.
A detailed description of Mahadan has come in our religious scriptures. In general, the donation of ten specific types of substances is called Mahadan. By giving great donations, a person enjoys the pleasures on earth while he is alive and attains salvation after death. Mahadan consists of ten things, which are said to be the best to donate. These are cow, land, sesame, gold, ghee, clothes, grains, jaggery, silver and salt. This donation is given for the sake of ancestors.
Like Mahadan, Ashta Mahadan has also been told. Eight types of things are donated in Ashta Mahadan for the cause of ancestors. These include sesame, iron, gold, cotton, salt, saptadhanya, land and cow.
Barley, wheat, paddy, sesame, tangun, savanna and gram are called seven grains. Barley, paddy, sesame, corn, moong, gram and savanna have also been called seven grains.
