Chennai, June 19: In a first of its kind event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the torch relay of Chess Olympiad in Chennai. This year, for the first time, international chess body FIDE has introduced the Chess Olympiad torch, a torch usually part of the Olympic tradition that was never carried at the Chess Olympiad. India became the first country to hold the Chess Olympiad torch relay.

The Indian values ​​of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam were displayed in the opening ceremony. During this, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced that it is very encouraging that the first torch relay for Chess Olympiad will start from India. He further said that the torch relay will start from India before going to all the continents.

It is to be noted that, to take the Indian roots of Chess to greater heights, this tradition of torch relay for Chess Olympiad will always start in India and travel across all continents before reaching the host country.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovic handed over the torch to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who in turn handed it over to Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand.

The torch will be carried to 75 cities over a period of 40 days before its final finale at Mahabalipuram near Chennai. Chess masters of the state will get torch at every place.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister of India said that India is proud that a sport with Indian roots has gone abroad and made its mark across the world. He further added that in the age of internet, chess is still being played by many people across the world.

He expressed his thanks for FIDE’s role in this process and said that whoever wins the tournament will win for the game itself.

He pointed out that the ancients in India made games like Chaturanga to keep their mind sharp and in the modern world, children are becoming problem solvers after playing the game of chess since childhood.

During this, the PM also tweeted and said,

“Today the first torch relay for Chess Olympiad games is starting from India.

For the first time this year, India is also going to host Chess Olympiad games.

We are proud that a sport, emerging from its birthplace and making its mark all over the world, has become an obsession for many countries.”

The 44th Chess Olympiad will be held from 28 July to 10 August 2022 in Chennai. Held since 1927, the prestigious competition is being hosted for the first time in India and after 30 years in Asia.
