Gandhiji returned to India from South Africa on 9 January 1915. He returned home from abroad and ignited the flame of freedom in the country.
In the year 2002, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced the celebration of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. The reason behind this was Mahatma Gandhi, know how? There is a small story behind this.
In fact, in the 18th century, Gujarati merchants thought of doing business in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa and reached abroad. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi arrived in Natal province of South Africa in May, 1893 as the legal representative of one of these merchant Dada Abdullah Seth. Then he saw the violence and discrimination there because of apartheid. Then his struggle against the apartheid policy and his fight for the respect of the overseas Indian community is well known. He succeeded in his mission by completely new and unknown methods of protest like non-violence and satyagraha. After this, Gandhiji returned to India from South Africa on 9 January 1915. Taking inspiration from his almost 22 years of struggle abroad, the day of his return home is celebrated as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
This time, Bharatiya Pravasi Diwas has been organized from January 8 to January 10 in Indore, the cleanest city of the country. In which today i.e. on January 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated. More than 3500 delegates from 70 countries around the world will participate in this 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan. On the third day of the Pravasi Sammelan, on January 10, the country’s President Draupadi Murmu will honor 27 overseas Indians. It includes academics from Bhutan, doctors from Brunei, civil society activists from Ethiopia. A committee headed by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has selected these foreign personalities.
When did Pravasi Bharatiya Divas start?
In the year 2002, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced the celebration of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. After this, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was celebrated for the first time in 2003. According to media reports, it was conceptualized by the Laxmmil Singhvi Committee in the year 1995 itself. At the same time, in the year 2015, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was revised and since then this day was celebrated every two years. Let us tell you here that in the year 2020, the corona virus had created havoc all over the world. Because of which Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was organized in virtual mode in the year 2021. But, this year in 2023 i.e. 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is being celebrated in Indore.
There’s always a theme
From 2003 to 2015, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was celebrated every year on 9 January. But, it was amended in the year 2015 and now it has been decided to celebrate it once in every two years. Since then Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has a special theme every two years. This special day is celebrated on this theme.
In the year 2015, the theme of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was ‘Apna Bharat Apna Gaurav’. Then this conference was celebrated in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This was the 13th conference. In the year 2017, the theme of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was ‘Pravasi Bharatiya-New Dimensions of Relations’. Then this conference was celebrated in Bengaluru, Karnataka. About 8000 delegates from 30 countries participated that year. At the same time, the chief guest of this function was the Prime Minister of Portugal, Dr. Antonio Costa. The theme of the year 2019 i.e. 15th conference was ‘Role of Diaspora in building New India’. Then this event was organized in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This year Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth was the chief guest and Himanshu Gulati, Member of the Parliament of Norway, was the special guest. In the year 2021, the 16th conference was held in New Delhi. Whose theme was ‘Contribution to self-reliant India’. Actually it was a virtual conference due to Corona. Whereas this year in 2023, the theme of this conference is- ‘Expatriates: Reliable Partners of India’s Progress in the Amrit Kaal’.
President of three countries will be involved
In this 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Sammelan, the Chief Guest, Dr. Mohamed Irfan Ali, President of Guyana and Chandrika Prasad Santokhi, President of Suriname, will be the special guests. While Australia’s Member of Parliament Janeta Mascarenhas is also the guest of honor at the Youth Pravasi Sammelan.
Initiative of ‘Padharo Mhara Ghar’ campaign
This time this conference is being held in Madhya Pradesh. A separate campaign was launched for this. For the Daral Pravasi Bhartiya Sammelan, the initiative of ‘Padharo Mhara Ghar Abhiyan’ has been taken by the Indore Development Authority on the lines of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’. Under this, about 75 families of the city have given their consent for the migrants to stay in their homes. This is being done for the first time. In fact, the state government does not want to leave any stone unturned in welcoming the NRIs coming to Indore. Unique efforts are being made for this.
What is the benefit of India from Pravasi Bhartiya Divas?
