New Delhi, 30 June : Presidential election 2022 is in the headlines. Apart from Draupadi Murmu and Yashwant Sinha, 113 candidates were trying their luck to become the President of India. However, as the nomination papers were not found valid, 105 nominations were canceled except Yashwant Sinha and Draupadi Murmu. Some of the candidates who tried their luck in the presidential election got their nominations canceled due to minor lapses. Earlier on Wednesday, the wishes of two other persons went unfulfilled when Bambam Maharaj Nowhattiya and Emchi Reddy were denied permission to contest the presidential election despite filing a petition in the Supreme Court.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Modi said that the process of filing nomination papers for the Presidential election began on June 15 and ended on June 29.

Condition of depositing 15 thousand rupees

According to PC Modi, “Out of the remaining 87 nomination papers pertaining to 72 candidates, 79 nominations were rejected on June 30. In these, lapses were found during scrutiny under Section 5B(1)(a). It is to be noted that the President and Vice-President Under the Presidential Election Act, 1952, a person desirous of contesting the Presidential election needs to have at least 50 proposers (MLA or MP) and 50 supporters. Under Section 5C, the requisite amount of fifteen thousand rupees has to be deposited. PC Modi It was informed that in 79 nomination papers these conditions were not fulfilled, hence the papers of the candidates were rejected.

Small mistake, paper rejected

PC Modi said, “During the period of filing of nomination papers, I received 115 nomination papers. Out of these 28 nomination papers related to 26 candidates under Section 5B(4) of the President and Vice President Act, 1952 at the time of presentation itself. The nominations were rejected because attested copy of the voter list was not attached.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General told that the nominations filed by Draupadi Murmu and Yashwant Sinha are valid. Both have fulfilled all the legal requirements for nomination. He said that July 2 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. After this the ‘List of Candidates’ will be published. It will include the name of the candidates along with their address. The lists will also be published in the Gazette of India and the State Gazette. PC Modi said that the voting for President’s Election 2022 will be held on 18th July and the counting of votes will be done on 21st July.

Is there a contest between 8 candidates?

According to PC Modi, the nominations of Yashwant Sinha and Draupadi Murmu are valid. According to this ANI report, a total of 105 (79+26) nominations have been rejected. In such a situation, if no candidate withdraws his name on July 2, then a total of 8 candidates will remain in the electoral fray.
