The Punjab government is planning to sell its surplus coal to private power producers. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said during his visit to Mumbai on Tuesday that the Punjab government is considering selling surplus coal from its mines in Jharkhand to private power producers. Such a step will bring down the cost of electricity in Punjab and provide relief to the people. His government is in touch with the Union Coal Ministry on this issue.

Mann said that coal is coming from Pachwara mine in Jharkhand and it is coming in such quantity that we can give it to private power producers having thermal plants in Punjab. The government is in talks with the Union Ministry of Coal for permission to give coal at a cheaper rate, so that their charges are also reduced.

The chief minister is in Mumbai for a two-day roadshow ahead of the proposed investor summit meeting in February. He claimed that power rates for industries in Punjab were already Rs 5 per unit less than other states. Holding the former governments of Punjab responsible, he said that due to their wrong policies, the industrialists of Punjab migrated to Baddi in Himachal Pradesh, just 20 km from Chandigarh. Mann said that the government is also thinking of color coding the stamps, under which industrialists will be able to pay all the taxes and duties.

The Tata group is investing around Rs 2,600 crore in the first phase of the project to be set up in Ludhiana, which is adjacent to the Punjab government’s Hitech Valley Industrial Park.

This electric arc furnace based plant will produce 0.75 MTPA of finished steel and the raw material for steel making process will be 100% scrap. Bhagwant Mann informed that the plant would be spread over 115 acres of land adjoining the state-of-the-art industrial park developed by PSIEC.
