The Congress will challenge the Supreme Court’s decision to release the accused convicted in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. A PIL will be filed by the Congress against this order in 3 to 4 days. This information has been given by a senior Congress leader. Let us tell you that the Congress had termed this order of the Supreme Court as ‘completely unacceptable’ and ‘completely wrong’. Along with this, it was also said from the Congress side that the culprits have been released from jail, not acquitted. In such a situation, he should not be seen as a ‘hero’.

The order was given by the Supreme Court on November 11
The Supreme Court had on November 11 ordered the release of six convicts, including Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandran. The Supreme Court’s decision came months after it granted bail to one of the convicts, AG Perarivalan, on May 18. Article 142 of the Constitution was invoked by the court to release him on the grounds of ill health and good conduct. Apart from this, the Supreme Court had also considered various degrees taken by the convicts in the jail as the basis.

Perarivalan, Nalini Sriharan, Murugan alias Sriharan, Santhan, RP Ravichandran, Robert Payas and S Jayakumar were arrested in 1991. Four of them, including Nalini’s husband Sriharan, are Sri Lankan citizens. On May 21, 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, by a female suicide bomber of Sri Lanka’s Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the Lok Sabha election campaign.
