Russian missile attacks are taking place in many areas of Ukraine. The attacks by Russian missiles targeting vital energy infrastructure across the country came as the strike was ongoing. Infrastructure in the capital Kyiv was affected this afternoon after the missile attack, according to the city’s mayor, CNN18 reported.
According to a CNN report on the Russian missile attacks, “one of the capital’s infrastructure has been damaged.” Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram, residents were warned to stay in shelters because of the threat of airstrikes. According to Oleksiy Kuleba, governor of the wider Kyiv region, Ukrainian air defense systems were retaliating.
Earlier today, several missiles targeted Ukrainian cities, prompting an air raid alert. “There are many missiles from the south and east,” the head of the military administration of the Mykolaiv region, Vitaly Kim, said on Telegram. Ukraine’s “air defense is working.” According to CNN, conflicts in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine in recent days has escalated, with local officials citing “large-scale shelling” of towns and villages on the eastern frontline of the Donetsk region.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a post on Telegram that water supplies had been suspended in Kyiv following shelling of the area following the missile attack. Klitschko asked residents to “stock up on water” while experts tried to “return water to the homes of Kyiv residents”.
Klitschko said engineers were also working to restore power. The country’s largest energy supplier, Yasno, said in a statement that infrastructure facilities in the region have been allegedly targeted by Moscow, reports CNN. There is no electricity in some parts of the city.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed fears and concerns over an escalation of hostilities around the Zaporozhzhia nuclear site after powerful explosions were reported in the area of Europe’s largest nuclear plant. “Powerful explosions rocked the area of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) last night and today. IAEA experts at the ZNPP have damaged some site buildings, systems and equipment among more than a dozen explosions from apparent shelling,” the IAEA said in a tweet. Damage has been reported, but no significant initiative has been taken so far for nuclear safety and security.
In a statement, IAEA Director-General Raffaele Mariano Grossi said the relatively calm at the plant came to an abrupt end due to the powerful explosions. Renewed shelling was visible near and at the site of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. IAEA experts at ZNPP reported to agency headquarters that more than a dozen explosions were heard within a short period of time in the morning local time. The IAEA team also saw some explosions from their windows.
With reference to information provided by the plant management, the IAEA team noted that some buildings, systems and equipment at the ZNPP site have been damaged, but none of them have so far been of concern in terms of nuclear safety and security. There is no news of any casualty. IAEA experts are in close contact with site management and will continue to assess and report on the situation.
