Twice as tall as the Statue of Unity
The magnitude of this tower can be gauged from the fact that its height is almost twice that of the tallest Statue of Unity in India. A tower of such a height has not yet been built in India. This tower has been constructed under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) of China. India has been opposing this project of China from the beginning. The construction of this tower started ten years ago during the tenure of the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Since then it has been plagued with claims of corruption.
Difficult to pay the cost of maintenance of the tower
This tower is one of the many ‘white elephant’ projects built with Chinese loans. State-owned Colombo Lotus Tower Management Company said they have decided to open their decks to visitors from Thursday and start selling tickets to minimize losses. Chief Executive Prasad Samarasinghe said that we cannot keep it closed. The maintenance cost of this tower is very high.
China’s 80 percent share in building the tower
The operator says that it is of no use as a communication tower, so we want to make this tower a center of entertainment. China has provided 80 percent of the funds for the construction of this Lotus Tower, built at a cost of about $ 113 million. This tower, built in 30,600 square meters, includes a hotel, telecommunication museum, auditorium, observation tower, mall. Former Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has accused the Chinese company involved in the construction of this tower of fraud of $ 11 million.
The former president had accused of corruption
President Sirisena alleged that a loan of Rs 16 million was taken from China Exim Bank for the project, which started in 2012. The President said that under the tripartite agreement, $ 11 million was given to the Chinese company. But this company disappeared. When the government investigated this scam, it came to know that there is no company of this name in China.
