Telangana Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy has assured that the state government will extend all possible help to farmers who faced severe crop damage due to hailstorm on Thursday. He also stressed on the need for farmer-centric crop insurance coverage.
Following the instructions of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, S Niranjan Reddy on Friday inspected rain-affected areas in Marpalli, Mominpet and other neighboring areas of Vikarabad district. He was accompanied by Education Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy, Rythu Bandhu Committee President Palla Rajeswara Reddy and senior officials.
Addressing on the occasion, the Agriculture Minister said ‘over 2,000 acres of crop damage has occurred in 13 villages falling under Marpalli and Mominpet mandals. Due to the rain and hailstorm, farmers who have grown crops of cabbage, onion, maize, melon and capsicum have suffered heavy losses. The state government will provide all possible help to the farmers and the damages caused by sudden and unseasonal rains will be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister.
He further said, ‘There is no comprehensive agriculture policy in the country. There is insurance coverage for humans and automobiles but unfortunately there is no such insurance for crop damage. With the emphasis on Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bhim Yojana by the Central Government, the scheme was implemented, but the farmers did not benefit much from it. Insurance companies are getting more profit than farmers. Today farmer centric crop insurance coverage is the need of the hour.
