Hyderabad: The Telangana government has started distribution of free rice to about 91.5 lakh families having ration cards in the state from Wednesday. Under this scheme, every member of the beneficiary family will get 5 kg for the next three months i.e. till March this year. Rice will be given. After this, from April the state government will resume the supply of 6 kg rice per beneficiary.

In a statement, Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamlakar said that due to software modification in rice supplied under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY), each ration card will be given instead of 200 kg during the period between May 2021 and December 2022. 203 kg of rice was given. Therefore, to adjust the quota, the government has decided to reduce one kilogram of rice per month for the next three months from January to March this year.

Gangula Kamlakar said, ‘From April we will resume distribution of 6 kg rice per person to all families with ration cards. Apart from the beneficiaries under PMGKY, where around 54.48 lakh families are being benefited, the state government will provide 92 lakh at its own expense. And distributing ration rice to the beneficiaries. While the central government provided free rice to ration card holders during the Covid-19 lockdown period, the state government additionally provided Rs 1,500 per family for two months and Rs 500 per family for migrant workers.
