Telangana Mission Kakatiya

Mission Kakatiya, the flagship program of the Government of Telangana, has once again been recognized at the national level for its successful role in improving groundwater levels, providing water for irrigation and drinking water. This latest report of Social Progress Index (SPI) for States and Districts has been prepared by the Competitiveness and Social Progress Essentials Institute. After this, this report was presented before the Economic Advisory Council and the Prime Minister.

According to the report, only two districts in Telangana, Hyderabad and Rajanna Sircilla, are in the ‘overexploited’ category, while 23 districts remain in the ‘safe’ category. Furthermore, the report acknowledged the proactive measures taken by the Telangana government to raise the water table in the state.

The report states, “Under Mission Kakatiya of the Telangana government, the people of the districts are taking an active part in the management of water resources. The mission mandates a local government body to implement various programs such as water harvesting and irrigation-based community management in a decentralized manner. In addition, the proposed plans were discussed with the villagers and farmers, who were motivated to involve them in the process.

As per the report, Haryana (134.56%), Rajasthan (150.22%), Punjab (164.42%) and Delhi (101.40%) were currently at a critical stage as their groundwater extraction value was more than 100 per cent. Whereas Arunachal Pradesh (0.36%), Sikkim (0.86%), Nagaland (1.04%), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (2.6%), and Mizoram (3.81%) fall in the safe range.
